need some help

ok i so just started surfing, and all i have to start with is a 8 foot foam funboard with one fin lol im about 6'2 and 165 pounds. now i know its almost impossible to be able to ride a wave starting out like this and although ive come close to riding one and kinda stood up on one i know i need a longboard. will getting a longboard really help alot? and how long does it usually take to transition from a longboard to a funboard?

As soon as you can step away from the foam one finned floating hindrance , get a longboard have fun, and a whole lot of learning!
Don't even think about anything about when go to a "fun board." All boards are fun.
You will know if you are ready and capable to go to another sort of board, when you are ready and capable :!:

You will do much better on a longboard as long as it has some width and thickness to it. Longboards are much more stable and easier to catch waves with. You will also ride the waves you do catch further on a good stable longboard. I have watched many beginner surfers and it is crazy how much better people do on a 10' longboard compared to a 9' longboard. You must ultimately be the one to choose your board size. I would say to get something that is big enough and wide enough to help make learning easier and fun.

Hi, I'm a beginner too and I found it much more stable when I bought my longboard -9'6"- what I found though is the best thing to do is get in the water as much as you can, the more you do it the better you get an more tou enjoy it. If you don't think your progressing as much as you like, get some lessons or meet up with some guys from here to get them to give you some pointers, I'm just a learner still but making fast progress so I hope you don't think in out of my place giving you my opinion.
I'm really pleased with my progress so far and spend all the time in not in the water doing exercises that correlate to the muscles I need in the water (shoulders,back an core) which includes a lot of push ups . I'll attach a link that helped me with push ups

In addition to long & thick stated above, get a square tail. All these things help tremendously.
