Going out with other surfers vs. surfing alone?

Do you usually go out with other surfers or do you surf alone?

I usually go out by myself and since I'm a beginner I try to stay away from other surfers.

I try to find a lifeguard tower but sometimes there isn't one.

What are you thoughts on this and what do you do?

Thank You!

Go out with others when I can, by myself when I have to. Since I'm also a beginner, I tend to play it safe when I'm out alone, and don't try to tackle any surf that I don't think I can easily handle.

Agree with Ron, it's always better to surf with others but sometimes that just isn't possible as a beginner. Don't go out to any location if you're not confident you could swim back (say, if your leash breaks). Be especially careful of rips, shallow coral / rocks, etc.

If you're surfing mellow breaks, have mastered riding whitewater, and understand basic etiquette, it shouldn't be too long before you can paddle out near other surfers. In my experience, people are usually pretty cool as long as you aren't a jerk or a menace. But each break is different and results may vary.

I think its sensible to to surf where atleast one other person is or a lifeguard tower which is atleast manned. just in the event that something does happen. when i surf new places i tend to surf near, but not too close to where everybody else is. but most importantly, before you go surfing make sure you know the spot. what sea bed it is, if there are any submerged rocks, coral or items! (shopping trollys being a favourite) also observe the area where you are going to surf, check for rips and currents and make sure that when you are out in the sea you have a point on land that you can check against if you drift.

I find surfing alone vs surfing with mates two completely different experiences, both great but for different reasons. I try to mix it up. When surfing alone I'll do as others here have suggested and exercise greater caution.
