Paddling-> Catching a wave (position)

Hello everybody, I have a quick question.
I'm a new surfer, and am curious regarding positioning.
There are two 'rules' that I know should be followed when positioning ones self on the board (while paddling)
a) not too far towards the nose to be pearling
b) not too far towards the tail to be pushing water
I believe I have found this spot, but on my 6'8 Fish, That leaves my feet hanging off the tail of the board. If I move up further, I start pearling and am unable to arch my back any further to prevent it.
Is it okay for my feet to be hanging off the back of my board?
If so, how will I stand?
Thanks, Richie
