I was reading an article in surfer a few months back about how Mark Healey goes about training to hold his breath during monster wipeouts. He actually practices while running on a treadmill to simulate the increased metabolic demand of surfing while getting held under. That seems a bit intense for me, especially considering I have no plans to surf Mavericks or anything nuts like that. I do think, however, my surfing could benefit from a little extra confidence on big days. I've decided to start training myself, and am following the current regiment: hold breath for 30 seconds, breath for 30 seconds, hold for 1 min, breath for 1 min, hold for 1:30, breath 1:30 etc... I actually find it pretty soothing, it feels pretty similar to meditation, where your focus is completely inward trying to calm yourself and slow down your heart rate.
Anyone else have any advise on training to hold your breath? I know this has been discussed before, but I thought I'd bring it up again. Cheers
