Knee Pop-up

I was the first video of my surfing the other day, it didn't look that bad with the exception of my pop-up. I pop-up to one knee and keep my back leg down, the awkwardly make it to my feet. I did realize I was doing this. I worked as an ocean lifeguard for 8 years before I started surfing and I guess I became used to poping up on two knee while paddling boarding. At first I would pop up onto my knee's while surfing but I fixed that (sorta) and apparently I've been poping up to one knee for a couple of years now.

How do I stop? Any tips, tricks, etc to poping up directly onto two feet? I feel like my pop-up is even worse now that I realize what I am doing because I am too conscious of it and I am trying to change... any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If it's working for you why change it?

My guess would be drills on dry land. Maybe even on a beater board in sand with a hole dug out for the fins. Build up some muscle memory.

People spend years perfecting their baseball, or golf swing why? Because good mechanics are proven to make you better.I would definetly change your pop up, and here is why. If you go to your knees first you have to then go from your knees to your feet, 2 steps instead of one. I know with surfing you will make a lot more waves with a one step pop up. Yes you can still surf the easy waves and maybe you are really athletic and can still make some difficult drops, but you will be even better with a fluid smooth pop up. I would do what the last post suggested bulid some muscle memory and practice your pop ups on dry land until you do not have to think about it, and watch your surfing improve! Also video is a great way to check your progress. With a little determination you will quickly have it! Good Luck!
