Hand placement for pop up

Postby Zee » Thu Oct 14, 2010 11:41 am

Hi all

Great site. would it be better to place my hands on the rails with most of the palms on the deck or to place hands underneath my chest to push myself up? i was contemplating the differences as putting my hands along the rails might cause instability if one arm is more fatigued than the other.

im a begginer on a 7'2" gun (not ideal but its something to just get out in the water). my popping up has improved greatly since i started last month and im starting to practice adjusting my speed and trimming and carving.

its just hand placement that i would like to touch up on to perfect my pop up.
thanks all greatly appreciated

For what it's worth, I've been told that pushing up using the deck and not the rails is better. Don't know how much it's worth. Personally, I used to use the rails, but now I have a whole bunch of pressure dings on my rail from grabbing and pushing up there. I'm kind of OCD and I like to try to keep everything in as pristine condition as possible, so I've been trying to push up off the deck instead. But honestly, I don't even know what I'm doing when I pop-up, it's more like a reaction then something that I'm consciously doing.

whatever feels the most natural is the best way to pop up

when your popping up

if your doing it right
you shouldnt even be noticing that your popping up

You are not supposed to use rail. If hand slips you may hit your face down onto board.
