How to sit on the board to prevent drifting in the lineup?

Postby truedis » Sun Sep 12, 2010 8:56 pm

I've been trying to figure this out on my own but haven't noticed anything consistent. Also searched a bunch and didn't find any discussions to this effect...

My question is what the best way is to sit on a shortboard while waiting in the lineup to prevent drifting in the current as much as possible. I'm curious about both how to pitch the board (nose down/fins up or nose up/fins down) and where exactly to point the nose rather than just straight out (slightly toward the current, slightly away, something else?). Any thoughts or resources on this particular bit of surfing minutae?

What? You mean you're not using an anchor? You need about 30 feet of line and a 6 to 10 pound boat anchor.

Seriously:
1) if there is kelp, grab and hold onto it
2) sitting in line-up is not a static thing. You have to continually re-position yourself. The stronger the longshore current, the more you will need to do this.
3) you can sit or lay on the board any which way because you will continually be re-positioning yourself
4) it doesn't matter if you are using a short board, longboard, or inflated raft; you'll continually be re-positioning yourself

Not sure what you mean about "pitch the board (nose down/fins up or nose up/fins down)..."
Maybe all you're talking about is where you place your weight on the board. Are you thinking of the board as a see-saw? If so, nose deeply submerged or nose pointing skyward makes no difference relative to holding line-up position because you will continually re-position yourself.

Thanks. I figured this isn't an exact science, and yes, I was referring to the pitch like a see-saw. I know I have to keep paddling to maintain position but I was just looking for the way that requires the least paddling ;) I thought perhaps there's something the pros know that I don't.
