fin position

hi i bought a new board i was surfing a 7,2 longboard with a tri fin setup but have bought a 9,6 longboard that is a 2+1 and the center fin in in a fin box so the position is adjustable. what im wondering is whats the best postion within the fin bos for is as in further forward or futher back. and what differences does this make to the board/ turning.

i had a lockbox set up on my merrick thruster kinda like this. if you have the center fin closer to the two side fins, it makes for tighter turning radius, good for tight turns in the pocket. i liked this set up so much i didn't really experiment with moving the fin back, but i assume it would feel less squirrely.

Pretty much what the above guy said. Fin forward for tighter turns, fin back for stability. I've usually got mine set as far forward as they'll go.
Best thing you can do is change it up every time you surf for the first few times. Playing around with it will give you a working knowledge of fin placement and what it does, and will make you a more knowldedgeable surfer.

Yeah, forward for loose, back for more bite. I have tried all positions on many boards, they each respond a bit diff....I had one when the center was moved up, the board was slow and piggy....it seemed that the three fins in a row with out much drop back in the center was a ton of drag.

I have come full circle in my 30 years of surf, I pull the biters off, and put the center fin back....single fin is my favorite...nothing like it fast and free! When you play with fin position with a single, you ca really feel the dif.
