Newbie, wanting to know how to turn?

Hi there

In March I found the love of surfing by learning to surf at Byron Bay. Fell in love and feel withdrawals as I want to go back out and practise. I found my experience positive but standing up but now I need to practise turns. As well as wanting to know how long should it take to get onto the bigger waves and shortboard. As I have been advised to stick with the longboards for a while.

I feel I want to continue practising at Byron Bay when I get the chance, first need a car then hire a board :D

Looking forward to the day I get back out there and practise me lil heart out

look forward to your reply

Kylie

Welcome to your new addiction! As far as addictions go, you could do much worse.
As far as turning, just look where you want to go. For more detailed info, take a look at some of the other threads, there is a lot of information here already.

I hope you get your transportation and kit worked out soon. Good luck and have fun!

Billie to Unorthodox: "Does that apply to surfing or driving a car?"

So pretty much when I am on the board, I look where I want to go and use my hips and feet. I was advised if I get a mini mal to practise on, are these turns easy to do? Because when I trained on the foam boards, i found it a lil difficult to turn.

Thanks for your help too :D

Any board made with conventional materials will be able to turn better than the foam boards you've used. A mini-mal is a great place to start for most people. I started out with a 8'6" mini-mal and it served me very well.

I am 5ft 4, and I have been advised I should get a mini mal :) Yeh I just dont want to use the foam board anymore when I do practise, so when its time to hire the board, I will talk to the guys and see what they get me. Looking forward to it, I love watching the surf videos online and got out a few on DVD.

If I visualise then I will achieve..woot!!!!!!!!!
