Getting back into surfing...

Postby theqman » Sat Nov 28, 2009 8:04 am

Ok well this isnt the most simple of questions, here's a little background info:
I stopped surfing 3 and a half years ago, i surfed for a year in 2006 an average of 5 times per week on a funshape(sometimes a shortboard).
I've clocked in my fair share of waves and was pretty good on my board.

I want to get back into surfing again, but my first question is will i have to relearn for a bit to get back into it(or is it muscle memory?)?

Also id like to start out on a fish, do you think i have a chance of getting back into surfing with a retro fish? I seriously dont like longboards, and i live on the east coast of florida(cocoa beach) so a fish would be great.

I'm 6'0, 160 lbs, i run 5 miles a day, have ample upper body strength, ect. so if you reccomend a board please include a basic size range.

I have alot of time for a relearning curb, i plan to surf atleast 3 times a week with long sessions from December 09 until April 2010.

EDIT: I'm thinking about getting this 7S - Superfish XL in 6'8 https://www.longboardhouse.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_40&products_id=538
Although I've read 2 reviews saying it doesn't hook into 1-3 foot waves easily, if at all(which would suck).

Sounds like you know what you are doing and don't need advice, but let me advise you on just one thing: if the 6'3" turns out to bee too small hang on to it and buy a bigger one, like the 6'8" you had in mind. Eventually the 6'3 (or smaller) will be the right call, might just not be your "comeback" board, but it'd definitely the right size for you...

Thank's for the input, id tell you how im doing with it but ironically all of those 4-5 foot waves we had over thanksgiving died the day i bought the board. It's supposed to be flat for the next 6-8 days too, ill let ya know when i get some action on it(the next swell should be at least waist high).

EDIT: I got into some 2 foot semi-glassy waves today, she paddles slower than i thought. The board is great although i need to get used to popping up without support under my feet. Basically i need to get my paddling strength back up, i used muscles i forgot i had today that have nothing to do with my land workouts...
