1) dont hit your face
2) if you fall try and keep your hands above your head so you dont smash your head.

i have hurt my neck on a wave, i thought i was knocked out, but i popped up and got out of the water. headache for the rest of the day but nothing serious. neck hurt when it happened too, i heard like a little *pop*

Get over it. It's going to happen to ya sooner or later so if you can't handle it I would suggest no surfing for you.

if you dont want injuries dont wear a knee leash they shred the back of your knees which is the most painful thing in the world. every movement aggravates it.

Yeah, I always try to hit my face whilst surfing! (sorry, couldn't resist).

I would agree with jethro, if you're scared of getting injured, don't surf. My back is knackered from it, had my neck retwisted (!) a few times but shur it's all part of the fun!
-It's inevitable that you'll be injured sooner or later!

Just hoping I don't actually break my nose, I quite like the way it's already shaped

I think apart from nearly drowning on several different occasiosn the worst surf injury I have has is breaking the top two rips on the left side of my chest.

I was on a 9'2" board, and was a little too far back in the wave. Anyway, it started to barrel as I was riding it face to the wave, I caught a rail and fell off but my board came right round in the wave and smacked me square accross the chest.

yeah - just rest them for a while.

The wierd thing was is that I just thought I had bruised them - it was UK in January (Woolacombe Bay in fact) and I was bloody freezing! It didn't start to hurt until well over an hour later when I got out of the sea and peeled my wetsuit off and started to thaw out a bit!!

I broke my bottom three ribs snowboarding six months earlier so I knew what to expect really.

Luckily no broken ribs since but one of my bottom ones still stick out where it never set properly.

A friend of mine (male), I brought him out surfing one day with my brother and I. I gave him my sister-in-laws wetsuit and he's a pretty big guy. He just about stretched it over his shoulders and it was so small and tight he couldn't tie up the zip. A few days later he was complaining of savage pains down below! -Went to the doctor a week later when the pain became unbearable and he had internal bleeding in his er...'manly bits'!

Lol...(he's grand now so I'm allowed to laugh)

oooouuuchhhh!!

As much as these tales are starting to make my eyes water I have one more similar to Phil's. Last summer a group of us were up in St. Davids surfing at Whitesands Bay. Great session.

It was just about time to get to the pub so we all caught the last wave in. One of the chaps with us who shall remain nameless caught a great wave last wave but somhow, as he got near the beach he jumped off his board and landed on his back in the shallow water with his legs in the air and spread wide open.

Just at that moment a wave came in and carried his board which was now a bit further out to sea than he was and carried it right between his legs as he was lying on his back legs akimbo in 15 inches of water.

Now the problem was he rides a longboard and had a meaty 10" singlefin in the bottom which hit him slap in the nuts and split his "sac" open!!! What is bizarre is his wetsuit was completely unscathed so his nuts must have POPPED!! AAAARRRRGHHHHHHH

Even worse is he had to go to hospital to get it stitched back up.

He was walking a bit like John Wayne when he got to the pub later I can tell you.
