Any mid sized city in mainland mexico or baja has plenty of surf shools with mellow waves for learning.
Just to name a few towns:
Los Cabos, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, etc...

Hi court,
I'll be heading out to jaco, costa rica last week july /first week of august. bailed out on the surf camp. I booked a cheap beach hotel in jaco and planned to get some private lessons. Two or three sessions from a guy name gustavo (jacosurflessons.com). Much more cost effective than a camp and will leave you money for drunken nights. Come along if you want man. Ill be going han solo. Also a beginner. Best place to start is where the real swells hit. im willing to take that chance.
the camp was around 1400 dollars.
I'm also starting out on a 6'10 shorthboard.
Good luck.
