Speed boost as soon as turning around to catch a wave

Just a question for the guys who ride shortboards, when you sitting on the board and see an incoming wave, and slide back to turn the board around, how do you create that sudden boost of speed when you turn the board around to catch the incoming wave?

Humm... by paddling?

Someguys stick the tail underwater as they turn so that when it "floats back up to water level" it gives you a slightly boost, something like a spring.

Yet i dont need to do so. I just paddle.
In my shortboard is not that much of an issue, but i remember back in my funboard days i missed lots of waves because chasing down, turning and gathering speed was way slower.
