Surfing Waves

How many people started learning on a shortboard, cause i when i decided to start surfing i just took out our shortboard and went for it. never looked back since, now i am pretty good at shortboarding and i can't longboard to save my life

Same here, I can't do a thing on big boards I feel like I'm trying to race a slalom on a supertanker

I started on a shortboard. I don't think I surfed a longboard for the first 5-6 years I surfed. The appreciation for longboarding came later.

i rode a longboard for a while. my friend and i started shortboarding at the same time (he never surfed at all before) and he passed me up pretty quickly. you can do it.

I started by swiping my dads longboard....I was hooked on the log...but strayed to the shortboard in my teens...I still have shortboards in my quiver. ....tho the log is my preferred tool

yeah didnt have the space in a car or on rack for a long board.and too lazy to find another way to carry it 45 minutes by car to the beach, so i got a shortboard.

I started out on a longboard, but have been riding a shortboard after 3 months of longboard; I tried to paddle and catch waves with the longboard my friend rent during a surf trip, it felt really akward, especially trying to turn the board around when trying to catch a wave, it's SOOO slow...

yeah, flyer is an excellent board built to accommodate surfers of all levels

started out on a 5'11x18x2...pretty thin board..especially for florida. Never ridden a longboard, but am often jealous of their wave count against mine in chop slop crap waves.......

I started on a shortboard and taught myself and so did my best mate. But I still tell everyone to learn on a long board first, because not everyone has the patience to spend a long time screwing up.

If you already can catch a wave then learning on a shortboard aint that hard... obviousy if you weight 190 pounds and you try to learn on a 5'9'' er that's pushing it.
I found it easier to ride a 6'3'' 18 1/2 2/1/4 than a thinned down funboard 7'0 and a 6'6 mullet. The lenght but specially the widht on those boards made it very dificult for me to ride fast beachbreak waves.

Got a Big Wave Gun for my longboarding - totally different and just as much fun as the shorty.

I started out riding a 7' Merrick surftech rounded pin. I think I got talked into buying this board as a beginner and probably shouldnt have. It worked fine, but I ended up buying a longboard a year and a half later.

The difference between learning on a longboard is incomparable. I ended up picking up the takeoff, drop and turning much sooner than I would have surfing only the 7'.

Now, after I have been surfing for 6 years I still use my longboard from time to time, but only use the 7' in head and a half to double overhead sets. I would recommend to most people who say they want to buy a funboard... don't. Just buy the longboard until you are ready for a real shortboard, because you will still use the longboard on small summer days.

I started on a thick 8ft funboard and was standing up within a month. I now ride shortboards, but I think I got hooked on surfing because I started catching waves almost right away
