Funboard limit on bigger days/ Second board question

Postby Pornstar » Thu Oct 30, 2008 7:48 pm

Whats do you guys think is the wave height/hollowness limit for this board to ride?
Its a 7´0 hybrid 20 wide, and 2 3/4 thick at the center but its very thin at both the tail and nose, has a thumb tail and slightly nose rocker and kick in the tail.

I understand this:
The slack rocker is a bit of a problem for steep drops.
The dimensions make it hard to get out on big days

So i was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a regular short board for the bigger OH to Oh and a half days.
I was thinking of asking a local shaper to make a 6´5´´ 6´6¨size.
I am 5´10 and weight 160 pounds. I can catch small medium waves just fine i struggle in the head -OH days. I am currently having difficyuylties turning the funboard but i didnt have the same problem when i surfed a 6´5´´ shortboard before. (i had a diferent problem back in those days i struggled catching waves) But back in those days i only surfed chest high waves.

On big overhead + days the wave has more than enough power to stabilize the ride.
The funboard would still be used on small medium days and on mushy pointbreaks.

whats your opinion guys?.
And is the black beuty or the mx a nice shape to ask the shaper to copy? I tend to turn with both feet instead of doing the skateboard kicktail thing so i guess a front footed designed board would suit me better.

Why Reefs???? i have probably my best rides surfing reef on my shortboards

In answer to your main question getting another board is always a good idea and seen as you have a reliable fun board i dont see the issue with getting a shortboard.

However If you master the fun board and are able to turn effortlessly turning a shortboard will be just that much easier.

But i do agree not have the right board for the conditions sucks and handicaps you.

funboards can handle the big stuff if you can get them out. unless its a very steep wave. howeveri wouldnt be taking one to a reef as they are usually the steep hollow barrelling waves you see pictures of. from what youve said you shouldnt have a problem on a shortboard with sensible dimentions. a mistake a lot of people make when they get their first shortboard is go for the shortest and thinnest thing they can find. bad idea.
