starting out

hey guys -
for years i have been facenated with surfing. now i am finally ready to get started. i have a tight budget so i need to know if i can start on a shortboard or NEED to learn on a long board. If it helps in your decsion i have really good balance. I also need to no how to find the right size board and wat type of waves to start on. i live on the east coast and not afraid to go big and get a few bruses. please help me - thanks a lot

alright someone from the east coast. it all depends on height and weight. so if you post that we can help you out more.

Yes, we do you need height and wieght...
But as to your second qs... or mabye first. I dont know. But you dont neeeeed to start out on a longboard. It is recomemded but not nessasary. i would suggest spending a fwe bucks on renting a softtop board first so that you can get the feel for it but again not nessasary (sp?). you can start out on a shortboard which btw is also cheaper. However it will be slightly tougher.

when i tried to start surfing on a shortboard i found out very fast that it is MUCH harder to learn on then just renting a long board. and i have been on my school's swim team for a while. but i have heard people say that they have done it so i guess it depends on how great your balance is. but once i rented the longboard i knew surfing was for me.
