where in the world should I go?

Postby cheekyeye » Sat Aug 21, 2004 12:34 pm

I'd say I'm still a relative beginner, and am planning to go travelling abroad next year- probably from February onwards. My intentions are to travel down a coastline somewhere, surf everyday, improve and generally have a wicked time along the way. The trouble is, I can't decide where in the world to go- can anyone recommend somewhere good? I've thought about going to Oz, but loads of people I know have been and have bumped into people they know from home- the whole point of me travelling is that I want to get away from England.
I'd welcome any suggestions!! -Cheers.

I have surfed all over the place - UK, California, Florida, South Africa, Oz, France, Spain.

I just returned from Costa Rica a few days ago and I have to tell you it stands head and shoulders above anywhere else I have ever surfed.

If you are after a true surf adventure you can't beat it. Warm seas, friendly, great food, compltely undeveloped, good domestic beer, kick-ass surf, beautiful scenery, empty beaches, dirt roads and best of all MONKEYS!!

If you have the cash, get yourself a board, a tent, a few buddies, a 4x4 and a map and head down the coast from Tamarindo.

me and my friend were planning on going to costa rica next summer. how expensive is it? would it be better to drive or fly and then rent a truck? and how is the food? one more thing, are you allowed to sleep on the beach?

cost of living is nothing there really - food is cheap, beer is cheap.
BUT - car rental is quite a lot so if you the facililty to drive there I would do that.

I wouldn't sleep on the beach in the towns but I think once you head down the coast to the deserted areas you'd be fine.

Food is fabulous.

Thanks 4 the tip! Costa Rica sounds like a strong contender- especially if there are monkeys.

well it's like anywhere really (and certainly no worse than places like Oz of South Africa) - plenty of nasties around but you'd be very very unlucky to be bothered by them. I think they have bull sharks and hammerhead sharks too. But they also have loads of beautiful fish, giant turtles, monkeys, iguanas and huge lizards and other great stuff too.

You just need to be aware of your environment I guess.

Oh and - water is beautiful and clear.

You'd think I worked for the Costa Rica tourist board! (I don't by the way - I just fell in love with the place!)
