Pop up is OK, but then.....

I'm doing pretty well with paddling into the wave and the popup, but then I find myself overbalanced on my back foot, front foot comes up off the board and I fall off backwards.
I suspect that maybe I'm standing up too much, and not keeping my knees bent enough and my center of gravity low enough. Does that sound like what may be happening?

keeping your knees bent and correct footing is all part of the pop up... practice the motion at home until you have it, and even do a few on the beach before you paddle out. you'll be surprised at how much it helps.

Agree practice on the ground with no board to get better allways. and for sure right before you go out. stretch too.

sounds to me like youre not committing enough. you need to get the wieght over the front foot to drive down the line and bottom turn.

I think you might be on to it. I'll let you know after the weekend.

Try and get up earlier if you can - before the board starts to plummet downward. And remember to use your arms for balance, and lead with your head and shoulders.
