big waves

Postby little waves » Wed Aug 18, 2004 2:04 pm

I live in new england, and I started surfing last summer, and have been surfing through this summer. I was doing fine in the nice little summer waves, but now that hurricane season is picking up, the waves are getting much bigger. I was hoping someone might have some advice on handling larger waves. i have only made it out to the line up once with big waves (well, big for me) and it scared the bejesus outta me. any pointers?

Only really go out if you feel you can handle it. If your gut feeling is you should not be paddling out you probably shouldnt. Apart from that its all about becoming used to waves of larger size. The only way to do that is spend more time in big conditions.

I know i have kind of contradicted myself but im trying to say it should be a gradual progression

thats whate every one says, if you dont think you can, then you cant. they may beright but it would dstill be fun. when i first went out there and there were 12 foot faces i was freakin scare, but surfing it is the same as surfing the small ones. one thing, its much faster. lean forward and youll be fine, worst come wosrt you fall off the back and get a little scrambled in the white wash,

thanks for the tips, i think your right - i just need to get more experience. i try and stay where it is not as crowded, you know, stay outta everyone's way and all. it prob doesn't help trying to control my giant log of a bic, but i just keep telling myself i will be all the better for it.

i wouldnt surf in anything too big with a longboard, you may want to buy a short.

my bic is a 7'9" , not huge, but still easy to learn on. i figured i would stick with it till i got better, then get a fiberglass fish or something. i know bics have a bad reputation, but i don't care much about image and all that, just want to have fun with out spending a ton of money.
