Best time of year to surf??

Postby RWhit » Thu Aug 21, 2008 5:35 pm

I've been out surfing three times now...started at the beginning of August and noticed that it's been real choppy. Yesterday I went out and it was like a washing machine.

Do you guys surf year-round or do you only surf at certain times? If so, when is the best time of year to surf?

It depends on the location you are. Some places have decent surf all year round, some don't. Usually, the best surf is in winter, summer being the least. But I am not sure if it goes the same everywhere. Here right now in summer the waves are small, but you can still surf every few days. Now in fall/spring is when the best surf is here. :)

Over here winter is better. Less tourists and swimmers to avoid... :)

yeah I live on the California central coast. Don't really care too much about the tourists because I know certain spots where nobody really goes. I'm just curious on how good the waves are traditionally during different times of year. One guy I talked to says he never surfs during spring or summer and usually goes during fall and winter...

I don't know...just curious on what you guys would say. I guess September through March is probably the best time??

Welcome to the surfing world, conditions are always changing. Yes here in California the bigger waves are in winter with the northerly swells. Summer south swells are plenty good enough for most of us though.
I don't know about in your area but in So Cal often you can get a clean session if you dawn patrol it before it blows out, providing there's swell.

hope this helps

Right, I'll make a note of that - 23rd October, best time to surf, take the big wave gun, feed up and train to peak on this day in history - Thumping Thursday.

Cool Thx :D
