shark issue

Postby pacodontbeg » Mon Aug 16, 2004 9:26 pm

As a beginner it is tempting to go out when the more experience surfers are out and they know the sharks are popping up. We had a bull shark nibble on a tourist last week and it was enough to put me out of the water..I stand on the shore despereate to go in. How does one know when it is good to get into the waves. It is also 2 dags after the hurricane Charely

Dude just go out. Besides it's the sharks that you don't see that you should be worried about.

I guess you right....it's tough to balance with and common sense. Just looking for a defined answer....there is none.

Carolina beach/Kure beach, she was 13 and was wearing jewerly on arms and toes. She was only in a few feet of water but it was a part of the beach where bait fish run....and there are run off pipes but near the opening of the Cape-Fear River and Ocean. .....lots of reasons for Sharks to be lurking around.

Did the jewerly that the girl was wearing, did that have any effect on her getting bit? Like can the sharks see the jewerly shinning in the water?

its not uncommon for this to happen it can act as a lure for the sharks and many other fish

Yep, sharks are commonplace, scary & a daily concern for surfers.
The more of you that actually believe that the better.....
More waves for the rest of us.

Hahahaha! Nicely put Brent!!
Luckily for me sharks arent really a problem for me here in England, so I guess you have the worry of sharks, but nice warm water. And we have zero shark worries, but colder water....Dont know which ones the best combination really.

Oh and yeh, the sharks think the glint of jewellery is a fish...and apparently surfing between dawn and dusk is the best times...cause sharks hunt at dawn/dusk? Oh I dont know, there must be a sharky post on every single surfing site online! Its not gonna happen, face it, you'd have to be a very VERY unlucky surfer to get shredded, especially now when the surfer numbers are rising at a massive pace...but nobody can deny it doesnt happen.
Suppose its all down to your personal experiences and confidence levels. Ooohh, get me!
