I'm also relatively new and borrowed a bunch of different size boards from friends to learn on... Ultimately, I found the Min-Mals to be my ideal fit... I'm 6', 195lbs and just bought an 8' mini-mal that I love..

first you should always always rent a softtop from the local shop, its much safer. next i would seggest some type of longboard, like a mini mal or a fun board even unlesss you want to buy a shortboard. any board you buy you can surf on. but it just may be harder to learn on.

i started off on a shortboard. it was a little hard to paddle/learn on but after a few days i was paddling as fast as longboarders and getting the hang of it. it was frustrating but i learned.

you paddle as fast i as longboarders? ive been a shortboarder for two years and the longboarders can still out paddle me. i always thought it was because longboards have more float.

does that mean you didnt rent a soft top and you actually learned on a shortboard.

when i go out and they are sitting in close like where the waves are peaking i paddle out a little further because that is the only way to get a wave that they dont. so i paddle hard and chase it down.
