Florida surfer contimplating board size

Postby 9 » Mon Aug 16, 2004 6:38 pm

I surf the east coast of Florida. I am 5'7" at 150lbs. I have ben using the NSP 6'8" like cake on 1.5 ft days. I want something smaller that I can duckdive with on 5+ ft days. Eventually I think I'll also buy an 8'4" lonboard but for now I'm looking for somthing I can duckdive and really carve with. Any suggestions? Much thanks!

well as long as your gonna keep the nsp board, i would suggest a shortboard around 6'. mabye 5'10 to 6'2". are you a strong paddler? if your not the go for something a little bit longer mabye a 6'4". if you are then go for something like 5'10". also get something a bit to the thinner side, mabye 1 and 10/16th
i would not get a nsp board again, i would go with a regular fiberglass.

update

Postby newguy » Mon Aug 16, 2004 6:58 pm

I do not own a board. I have been renting the 6'8" NSP. My swimming is still building stronger, I've only gone on 5 surfing trips (but I feel good about my progress in strenght and endurance). Being that I don't own the 6'8" should I still go much smaller? I know I don't want anything over 6'6". Thanks again.

ok that changes things a bit. first off, if you know how to duck dive you can do it with anything 7', i have a 6'6 and i "can" duckdive (i suck at it but i can get it underwater). now, you realize that if you get a shortboard you probably wont be able to use it in those 1.5 footers. if you want a board only for those 5 footers then yes get what i said before, (if you do do this, then yes, get a longboard for those small days). if you want one board for the 1 footers and the double overhead waves i strongly recomend a fish. a fish has more volume but can still manuver very well. i would suggest something around 6'4". you could get a 6' fish and get it a bit thicker then the usual, mabye 2 and 2/8ths. any board size you get you will be able to surf it. however get a shortboard and you wont be able to use in those 1 foot days.

if your not that good a paddler yet go with the fish. if you dont want to buy many boards go with a 6'2" fish and then buy a longboard, again dont get an epoxy board. i think that they dont react as well and dont surf as well, but then again i never surfed them.

i am 5'6" and 140 and i have a 6'6" fish and just can back from over head waves, and it rocks in them. my old board, a 6' fish with a thickness of 3.5 inches was able to surf the 1 footers and double overhead. i really thik a fish is the way to go.

Id say that if youve only been surfing 5 times to stick witht the NSP a bit longer. If your a beginner jumping straight to a shortbaord will make your progress frustratingly slow

When its five foot can you get out back on the NSP?
