How many of you properly warm up?

Postby greypump » Fri Aug 08, 2008 9:26 pm

Just wondering how many of you genuinely have a warm up routine before you hit the water? If so what do you do?

not a bit... do stretch the arms a bit while waiting for that first wave... dont think that really counts though..

I always warm properly. Start with 2-10 min run in wetty carrying board depending on spot, followed by stretching every muscle pretty much for 5 mins.

i stretch for 5 minutes. Because i used to just run into the water but then once i got a horrible muscle cramp on my calf while trying to turtle rolll. It hurt so much that I let the waves carry me back on shore. If that was it then I woulda been ok.. cept after the pain was mostly gone i went back in, i got another one on my other leg :x

I quickly stretch my arms and legs at home (where it's nice and warm) and then run to the beach. Stretching my arms should help keep the muscles nice and loose, while running should increase my body temperature. Stretching legs might seem unnecessary, but when I was just beginning, I once slipped off the board with one leg while the other one staid on the board. I ended up doing a split (as in gymnastics) and tore just about every tendon in my inner thigh... ;)

I wave my arms around and bend my legs ineffectually for about 15 seconds before entering the water.

5-10 mins of dynamic stretching on the beach...at the same time looking for the best peaks! Constant stretching while waiting for sets helps me surf longer too.

I turn the heater on in the van to full for about 2 mins prior to getting in my wetsuit.

My surf instructor had us all stretching and running all over before we started any sesh....i felt like crap in the morning and thought that it was because i hadnt surfed before.

but once i came home and had my first sesh on my own terms, i didnt warm up and...........do you know what.........i didnt ache in the morning.

as usualy your milage may and probably will vary, but for me, ive never been back since.

Stretch my lower back and calfs before I get in as being booger these are the hot spots for injury as you twist and throw yourself about.
