i do understand basically how to do it.. but the waves around here have been fairly calm and i just get through without having to do anything.. how should i practice? is it possible to practice it without a breaking wave ahead of you?

Yup.
The bit that you're practising is sinking you and the board and then the 'scoop' forward, so you can practise on flat water.

Absolutely you can practice without a wave. It's better with a buddy so he or she can tell if you if you fully submerged yourself. The deeper you go the better.

I also sometimes duck dive in place to cool off if I wore a suit and it's too hot.

Practice in whatever small waves you've got. The important thing is that you get the movement and the timing, and that doesn't need big waves.

ya just paddle really hard and the momentum will help you out big time.

Even better: watch the duck go over the falls and wonder why they ever decided to call it duck-diving...
