Sit near the tail swirl your legs and using your hands , stroke one forward and on backwards. You will turn quick.

You have a log? Go ahead and slide down your shorts and poop fast, then turn and paddle for the wave. Pray you don't have a wetsuit on. Maybe fling it at the last guy that cut you off.
The trick to turning fast is to grab the rail of the board in the direction you are turning, lean back and PULL. Then swirl your feet and paddle with your other hand.

^^ do it that way too... in messy conditions i sort of sit half way turned just to give myself a second or two more.

I always sit half turned, as I'm slow as hell at pretty much everything on a surfboard.

I stuff the tail deep, and use rotational foot movement to get er around.....as you turn release the nose and the board will shoot you in the right direction, giving you a chance for a no paddle take off.
That is what I would do.

Basicalu swing the nose up then round.
Trying to turn the log when its flat will be slow, lots more resisance from the water that way.

Good reply. I also angle my board away from the waves. It's a harsh trade off, catch waves a lot with a longboard and deal with turning a 18 wheeler semi or shortboard for the quick maneuvrability. I longboard and shortboard but I feel I'm not quite fit enough for carving. To all surfers: never touch a stoge.
