i really wanted to. i felt like since they could catch small waves and are pretty wide that they would be perfect.

but now im more interested in progressing and learning the basics.

but if there's anyone out there that started on a fish, i would be interested in hearing what your experience was like.

also ive heard alott about needing the basics and was wondering what everyone out there thinks are the absolute basics are for being "in it to win it" with surfing.

thanks a heap everybody

yeee

p.s. this forum teh pwnxr

To me the basics of surfing are paddling, popping up, getting to the line-up, sitting on board, catching waves, and simple turns. When you can confidently do all that you got the basics pinned.

As far as starting on a fish i advise against it. Fishes lack the same stabality as a mal and being a whole deal smaller will likely cause issues. Its not beyond the realm of impossability but unless you are very gifted you will likely end up getting frustrated as fishies arnt ideal as a learner board

3 years learning on a mal , borrowed my mates fish for a play, paddled it a bit ok, couldnt catch a wave even whitewater realy.

Much as you feel you want to, I wouldnt recomend trying.

Even though there wide and can have float they have much less than a longboard, also have very little rocker too so you have to be fairly precise when you take off, and take off a lot later in a wave.

No no no no, I can't do xxxxx with fish. Mini mal is the way to go or if you're on a tight budget, just a shortboard.

how much surfing could in a week? hmm..right now i'd have to say 1-2 trips out.

probably as fit as the average person who doesnt do anything to stay in shap which is probably horrible. and im about to be 21 and weigh about 140.

I'm guessing 140 is llb....

Get a log. 9ft and geared to a learner.

I would suggest that a fish is an awesome board to surf on when you're happy with popping up, turning, etc and you maybe want something a little more skatey..... I own a shortboard, but hardly ever use it anymore... My favourite board is a fish, and second fave is a fish! They are great, but not ideal for learning on because they're normally quite short, and although they have volume, and they're buoyant, they're very slidey, and so it would be best to go for something a bit more tame first. Mini-mals are loads of fun too!

PS hi everyone who I know... I'm in the Gulf at the moment, so that's why I haven't been around!

couple of friends i started surfing with a year ago but who took the winter off so basically starting again just bought retro egg shaped boards. loads of width loads of volume but quite short 7' and 7'2. they seem to be getting on great with them. had a go on one yestersday and they are really stable nearly as stable as my minimal.
seems like a good compromise if you don't want to have to deal with a log. thinkin of getting one myself for those consistently breaking days.
