Possible to teach a beginner on my board?

Postby Rico » Mon Apr 07, 2008 8:20 pm

heya,

I ride a 6`4 fish and I'm going to Portugal and France with a friend who's little experienced in surfing (basically surfcamp and was able to surf green waves down the line with the funky foamie minimals they use).

He said that he likes the shape of my board and wants to buy a similar one, so I decided to give him a try on my board when we're there (if theres no similar one to rent, I fear so because all the cheap stuff they offer in 2nd hand is patched-up and the rest BIC). Thats the background.

Is it possible to proceed on this shape at his level? (Notice the winger)

Image

He's 175cm, 70kg. We're both active Judoka so theres quite good strength and stamina to paddle (I'm fine with paddling, so should he) :D

I reckon itd be a challenge, but can not decide whether the idea is okay or total bullsh*t :o

any experience?

greetings from europe

bit of a noob myself... but have something similar in shape myself. Same thickness and width but 7'2" tho. found it really hard! can catch waves and turn on it but i have way more fun on minimals or longboards.
can't hurt to let him try but imho he'd be better off with something a bit bigger with a rounder nose!

If you want to have fun, go with mini-mal or longboard, but if you want to learn the hard way and enjoy the learning process, shortboard is the way to go!

yeah its obvious that shortboards are not for beginners, but that's not my point, this is a 21'' wide fish that should be easier to learn than with a real sb.. on the other side, it has a very loose feeling (winger&swallow).

I think it should be possible within 1 week, but I fear that I underestimate the balance thingy for a beginner...
