Board advice

I am currently riding a 10'6 epoxy and am comfortable catching and standing on whitewater waves. I was thinking of getting a shorter board. What size should I go down to - 9'6, 9'0, 8'0? or should I stick with the 10'6 until I'm comfortable catching unbroken waves on it?

Thanks

There's not a great deal of point in changing boards until you can catch unbroken waves. A few more sessions on your current board and then you'll have it.

After that it'll be time to get a custom board suitable for your weight, waves, and style. Dont just go on length. Talk to a reputable local shaper.

Incidentally, this site is rubbish.
I put myself in as 'intermediate', and my weight as 80kg...
It recommends a 7'3 or a 7'6....

...I currently ride a 6'3

It takes no account of waves, style, board preference, etc etc.

To be fair, it does tell you to talk to a shaper, but even as a guide for beginners, its way too limited.

Or maybe Im just 'expert'
(No need for anyone to come back with a witty put-down here... Im well aware of my stuck-in-intermediate status)

10'6" is huge tho.

How big are you? Could be counter productive if its too big, you've got to be able to paddle it out back and get a bottom turn in.

When you go down in size all the size comes from the center of the board, so you loose a lot of volume per ft of board you shrink.

I'm 6'2 230Lbs. Although great in the beginning the 10'6 seems to hinder me sometimes now espiecially getting into waves. I'm pearling a lot.

Unless the waves are particulalty punchy or have pitch then that will be technique rather than the board.

Make sure your slightly angled on take off and popup quickly (by quickly I mean very early on catching the wave).

But a 10ft board is going to be a lot to handle.
