Rate my pop-up

Hey everyone,

I'm very new to the site as you can probably see, as I actually just discovered it. I'm all the way up here in Victoria Canada! :P

Anyways, the purpose of this thread is to see whether this demo pop-up I filmed would be good for a how-to video. It probably seems like a weird question, as I have been surfing for about 2 years now, and surfing this shortboard for about a year, so hopefully I know how to popup!

That said, I have had problems, albeit only with this board due to the narrowness and the high amount of rocker. I guess I've gotten used to it finally, but can anyone give me a critique on my pop-up, so I can put up a vid on youtube? I just know this kind of video (on popping up on a shortboard, instead of a longboard) hasn't really been available. That said, I'm aware it might not be AS helpful due to the fact that popping up on a surfboard on a bed is much different from the water.

Any hints and/or advice?
Thanks a ton :)
Derek

Edit: Sorry!! I forgot Youtube has a delay before the video is uploaded! I'll post the link!
Apologies!!!

Edit x2:
Here is the video, I didn't have time to edit it to slow it down, but I think you can get a good look at my body mechanics and stuff!

Thanks everyone!

Thanks :)

Unfortunately, I'm limited with surfing possibilities right now, since I'm in Vancouver ( THE MAINLAND). So I have to wait for windswell!

Going skimboarding and practicing pop-ups until I get back in dem waves!

Ya its always offputting when you got something sorted in your head but dont have the opportunity to put it into practise. If you cant physically surf then just watch ample amounts of surfing to get it in your head :D

Just saw this in the related videos, does anyone use this technique? Good/bad?

I actually started out using that technique.

I found it EXTREMELY difficult to stay on the wave. This technique puts SO much weight on the tail of the board and is quite slow, so that it's borderline impossible to stand up fast enough for steeper waves.

I think with slower moving and less steep ways, this could potentially work.

Thanks for the replies and comments by the way!

I think that one has been on here before and the general consensus was......BAD for the reasons Derekwl said.

you're pop up looks pretty good. the other one posted not so good, looks like it would take to long to do and probs lose balance trying to pop up like that on a shortboard.

the pop up in the second video shown is a cheaters way up. wont work at all when you need a quick takeoff.

I know a lot of surfers do it, but I always try and get beginners to place their hands flat on the deck of the board, rather than grabbing the rails on the take off. Two reasons why. Your fingers create a lot of extra drag, slowing you down at the critical point, and if your hand loses the grip and you slip off, you can chin your board pretty bad, that can hurt.
