Newbie q: Fitness level?

Postby atpooh » Sat Jan 24, 2004 3:02 pm

Hi guys!

Am starting my surfing lessons real soon... can't wait! cos I really love the ocean and am an avid diver... am thinking of checking out the sea on the surface ratehr than under now! :)

Am just wondering tho : do you hafta be really fit to surf? And in my case, to learn surfing and excel in it?

Personally, I think am only fairly fit.. I go to the gym fairly regularly and lift weights (light ones tho, as am just keeping toned!)Comments anyone? Love to hear from teh girls... :)

And perhaps one more newbie q: what was the biggest problem / trickiest issue you'd to overcome before surfing well?

Thaaaaaaaaaanks! :)

Fitness is important when surfing at any level

Hi atpooh, welcome to Surfing Waves.
Lets get straight down to business.

do you hafta be really fit to surf? And in my case, to learn surfing and excel in it?

Fitness is important in surfing. It is a physical sport and to get the most out of it you need to be fit. If you are lifting weights then that is a good start. Strength is a part, but also cardivascular exercise is needed. Start hitting the treadmill, stepper and rowing machine :)

what was the biggest problem / trickiest issue you'd to overcome before surfing well?

I think for a lot of surfers the biggest problem not living near the beach and having a regular surf. There is nothing else like it for holding back your progress when learning to surf.

(Let's hear from the girls now eh)

ok so im not one of the girls but im gonna say something anyway. I consider myself to be very fit, in fact the only thing that kept me from trying out for the yorkshire cross country team was a bad shoulder, but i still feel extremely tired after a good surf session. I also need to improve my upper body strength.

i haver a fitness book that was made by the army but is for normal people, and at a good fitness level you are suposed do do push ups pushing, clapping placing hands on the floor again ando repeat...

not mentioning jumping, opening your legs stretched, touching your toes with your fingers and landing on you foot...

i hope you dont have to be that fit to surf...
