How do U catch steep waves late? what tips do you guys have? I see really good surfers catch them right when there about to break and do it successfully. When I try to catch waves late, I end up getting hammered or pearling. What do these guys do different? Also, good surfers at my break, when catching steeper waves, tend to not paddle so profusely but will maybe do 3 hard double arm paddles, gain momentum, and once they feel the pull of wave take off. How hard do you guys paddle for steeper waves and when do you feel you can take off before you get hammered?

well it depends how late, but i find if i see a wave about to break and i fancy it i just put 2 quick strokes in and popup straight away, if i don't pop up quickly enough i take a beating, otherwise i'm ok it comes with experience, so you just need to practice

Taking off late is something you get sorted by wipeing out a lot :-)

i never concentrate on how many paddles i need or anything like that rather i just go by feel - too much concentration eliminates natural instinct

"use the force" ugh star wars

yea well generally if i dont get it in 2 strokes i'll pull out, instead of losing position and getting nailed
