Older thread, but I payed a lot more attention to my paddling this last time out and noticed that I wasn't digging as deep as I should've been. Also, I noticed my hands naturally made the "S" shape as I stroked down. Anywhoo, great tips!

Reaching down as deeply as possible is a bad idea it is hard on the shoulders and is inefficient

Another bad habit, better by far to let the fingers splay a little as the water pressure comes on to the hand, it gives a more powerful stroke, and keeps the arms relaxed.

Gotta disagree partly on this one Roy, I used to surf my short board at the same line up as the long boarders - paddle hard, pop up and pump till it formed  .

Fingers together and paddle like an Olympian – I have never managed a real session with relaxed arms !

Maybe it’s just me :D .

We're probably talking about the same thing. . fingers seem closed but actually just splay a wee bit, rather than clamping them together hard. Body and arms work just as hard but not tight due to clamped fingers.

Hi sx :D !

I agree - paddling a longboard is a bit different to paddling a shortboard both to get outside and to catch a wave.

Standing and riding is a world apart also so those who try one over the other – It’s gonna be tricky for the first few times  !
