I body surfed then body boarded the knee boarded then used a surfboard. I started with the latest design surfboard made for someone my size and condition. Now after not surfing for a long time I have a funboard made for someone my increased size and increased age and increased out of shapeness :) but still with the latest design. I would say if you are familiar with waves and a well conditioned athlete especially a swimmer then go for the short board. Once you learn you won't need to switch boards. However it is a steep learning curve for about 6 months so if not and also if you are the type to give up sooner then get a bigger board to start off with and you can surf it immediately.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

@55funsurf, I started out by renting funboards, and while they catch waves easier they were just to bulky and mellow for me, safe to say it didnt take me long to go and purchase my own. Its been a struggle to learn on shorter boards, but when you succeed it gives a real sense of achievement.
Its just you and the heart beat of the earth, that moment when u take the drop nothing else matters your mind is completely free of all material thought processes. Your human.

I don’t know why I am not getting the enough courage to do surfing. I know swimming but then also. I get distracted whenever I see 4-3 feet wave.
