I'm a beginner surfer and I've had 5 surfing lessons and a surf with a friend. Tommorow I'm getting a 6' soft board. I'm 4'10"(145cm), 13YO (small for my age, I know), 81lbs (37kg). It costs $100 AUD ($85 USD). What do you think of my choice? Too small? Should I get a 7' soft board instead? :?: :?

I totally agree. I would not get a soft board. You are limited to standing up and little to no turning ability. Get a board that you can surf on now but still gives you the room to grow on as far as skills. For your height and weight the fat boy does not sound like a bad idea.

Another little question... do soft boards need wax? A guy working at a surf shop told me that soft boards are already a bit grippy so there's no need for wax. Is that true?

Being young, you're probably going to outgrow the soft board pretty fast. That also means you probably don't have a lot of cash. If you can save up, then a fiberglass board will last you longer. Go to surf shops often, you never know when you might bump into a good deal. Good luck man!

My first board is a minimal... supposedly 8''6... i've borrowed a longboard now, which is i reckon about the shortest you can get a longboard... right around 9'', perhaps a few inches more... the boards are almost identical looking, but it's a huge different both catching waves and riding waves with them! Not to mention the balance!

First surfboard was a Rick, 1975 shaped for my pops by Phil Becker, when he was shaping out of Rick surf shop in santa monica. Pops felt the board was to small for him. 8'0 single fin, classic 70's point nose, square tail. So he gave it to me!!!!
Pops then ordered a 9'2" nose rider.....which became my second board...I went thru a lot of shorties thru the 80's in high school.....But I rode that log till it got stolen in 1990.

I wish I was able to have kept those boards.....they were classics

My first board was also a BIC. I think 7' 9" I bought it and payed darn near $450 which I KNEW was too much. But I was in Puerto Rico where boards are at a premium. I was stupid enough to think I could find a good used $200 board but no way. In PR a good used board IF you can find one will cost you. ( On a side note, it was so bad, that a friend and I agreed that on my once a year trip to California, I would buy 2-3 used boards for $200 each and bring them back to PR and triple our money. The week before I left, Clark Foam folded)

Anyway, back to the BIC, it was too darn short ( I am 5'7" 180 LBS) and took a lot longer that it should have to learn. In fact, It was not just me. I watch many others suffer with the too small of a board.

i basically learnt the skills on a 7'4 south coast thruster which was almost 3 inches thick and about 20' wide board was from the early 80's. It was pretty much rockerless and had glassed in fins. By looking at the board you would have though it would be stable as hell but it wasnt also paddled like a pig its a miracle i ever learnt

My 1st board was a 7 foot dixon magic carpet, pretty good board to learn the basics on.
2nd board was a 7 foot o shea fat boy flyer, a great board!
I'm now onto a 6' 6" JP shortboard, loving it and aint had too much problems with the transition.
