snowboarder needing surfboard advice

Postby Guest » Mon Aug 16, 2004 1:49 am

hey i grew up snowboarding my whole life in vermont, but i had to move with my family to bethany beach in delaware and want to take up surfing since its so accessible now and snowboarding isn't anymore. the waves are usually 3-6 feet i would say and anytime it gets over 6 there's too much dumping. i'm 6'00" 180 pounds, i'm thinking about buying a fish to mess around with during the summer rather than a mal or funboard. any advice on the type of board or length i should get? thanks for any advice.

first, have you ever surfed before?
if you have then yes sure get one.... i suggest going a bit longer mabye 7'4"
however if you havent learning on something that small would be crazy. i suggest going to your local surf shop and asking to rent a soft top board. learn on that... then buy yourself a board.

Soft tops are great to learn on. Plus you can rent them almost anywhere for a few bucks an hour. Then after you can pop up and ride, go to a local board shop and talk to as many people as you can about boards. No need to buy one now.

Longboard for Sure

Hey man - get a 9'0 thruster (fin) squash (tail) used longboard. This is the most standard size and will grow with you through the years. Most 9' boards like this will surf knee high to double overhead. And, you end up not really getting into surfing, re-sale value is great, or it'll look good on your wall.
