When to Stop Considering Yourself a Begginner?

Postby surferdude_scarborough » Fri Jul 30, 2004 3:39 pm

Hey guys. I've been surfing for about a year n i have a bic 6'7 but i can count the times ive taken it into the water on my fingers. I can pop up every time and make my bottom turn and surf down the line. i can paddle pretty quickly to get out back and sit up on my board. I went to cornwall last week and one day it was overhead and i was fine. i'm not trying to sound big headed and im not experienced by any means but thinking about what ive said i dont think im a begginner anymore but what do you guys think?

As soon as your able to have enough confidence to know that your not a begginer and don't have to ask is when you have gone beond the begginer level. keep it up and surfs up.

i think when you watch other surfers and you see that you are becoming better then them you are no longer a begginer.

you are no longer a begginer when people start watching you ride a wave. And you are definately not a begginer when people acknowledge you when you get a good wave/pull of a sick move etc.
another thing - when you lose that "im worried about what people will think if i fall off" then you are no longer a begginer.
My advice is however, stick in there and you will soon be carving it up.

i don't care what others think when i fall, but that's just because i do it so often, lol. i've been to the beach maybe 12 or 13 times this summer, but am yet to be able to stand regularly :? ... i'm 6'4" 150lbs using one of the 6'8" NSP epoxy boards... was hoping to learn by summer's end, but college is approaching quickly. oh well, i got a decent tan, and lots of fun out of it.

I dont think your a beginner when you dont have to worry about popping up, when it come naturally.
I guess experience is everything though, but contradicting that some people are just naturals...
Hmmmm, just keep it up dude.

riding the line is when you ride with the wave and follow the path it makes. the bottom turn is when you drop in and either turn right or left to go down the line.
