Another pop up question PLEASE HELP

i moved my hands back about a further six inches today just trying it on the lounge room floor and did the pop up with so much ease. I couldn't believe it. Going out to try it on the water in the morning.

Popping Up

Im in the same position as Aaron.
When I am practicing at home on the floor, the floor gives me the help I need to pop up as i can launch my self up using the stability of the floor.

When I am in the surf I dont have the floor to help me.

Should I be practicing on the floor popping up without my feet aiding me at all?
When I try to do this I simply dont have the strength to get to my feet and end up landing on my knees.

I have been in the water for 2 hours a day for a month, can paddle almost perfectly but popping up is impossible.
Im 6ft, 85kgs and learning on a 7'4" 20inches wide.

Does anyone understand what I said?

Hey my fellow kook!!

I understand exactly where you're coming from - I'm also in the position of practising my pop-up at the moment.

I think that when you start it IS easier on the floor - like you said because of the stability. However, I mainly use the floor as a way of building up my arm strength and as a way of getting the pop-up 'routine' firmly registered into my brain so that I don't have to think about it so much in the water.

I think the smoother your pop-up action, the less worry there is about board stability - because as soon as you're on your feet in the right position, balance and stability will be there - let's just say I'm working on this part now!

Or, I might have a massive advantage because I'm 5'2" and on a 7'2"!!!

Kook,

I catch your drift, I have the same problem as you, on the floor you can push up off the floor with your feet to get to pop up position,

I have started putting my board on my bed so my feet hang in thin air, I can pop up but only by putting one foot on the back of the board like shown in the video clip,

I am 6 foot and have a 7,9 bic is this the correct way to pop up?

Practicing on the floor is good for what Ellie mentioned - getting the movement into your brain a bit more.

how you pop up can depend just as much on the wave as on your board, as well.

If it's a slow crumbler, you might have time to push up your upper body and slide your legs a bit forward. On a fast wave, you might almost be scrambling to get up quickly.

I suppose, thinking about it, I use my waist and upper thighs to push up and let my legs swing forward.

But honestly, I don't think too much about what my lower body is doing. I'm more focused on balance, speed and the wave. If you try to think of each step it takes to pop up, you'll never get it.

If you can't pop up, by looking at the consequences of a failure, you can better figure out what to avoid doing. For example, if you get up, but your balance is off and you fall right away, you probably have your feet too close together. So next time, concentrate on keeping your feet further apart.

But if your board shoots out in front of you, you may be leaning back too far (which is a common issue - subconsciously you're avoiding a fall by leaning back. This causes the board to go faster, with your upper body off center to the back).

IMO it's a useless question don't waste time searching the net for replys about pop up you'll do it naturally just go out and practice practice practice oh and start gradually

Naw, not a useless question. Like you said it will come naturally. He just wants to know how to do it so it will come naturally. For it to come naturally it is just practice practice practice.

This may sound stupid but what helped me a lot was to think it all through in my head when I was not surfing. I think of how to paddle, angle to the beach and what it feels like when I have caught the wave. Then I think about how to pop up. So when I am surfing I think it is more etched in my mind and it comes easier. For me this makes it so I don't have to think about it when I am in the water. I don't know if that makes sense but it works for me.

Surely it's easier to pop up on a wave, (if you've got the balance) as the board is tilting forward and you have gravity helping you throw your legs forward?

Once you've got the basic surfing technique in your head I think messing around in the white water is a waste of time, I was trying to teach a mate a month ago in the white water and I was finding it so difficult to balance cos the wave batters you from all angles.

Get into the line up asap and practice!
