need some tips

Postby bberg516 » Sat Oct 14, 2006 7:57 pm

ive been surfing for about 6/7 months on a shortboard and i can catch waves, paddle and take the drop easily, my main problem now is riding the face. My mate said that when i stand up i should lean into the wave for which way i want to go, i tried this and it works, but i cant keep going along the face, if anyone can help me and give me info on how to get the next step on keeping with the wave instead of just dropping and staying for a little bit and then stopping i would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you so much

keep looking down the face (the way you want too go) and every time you feel you self coming of the wave dig your back foot in agian.
and the main thing is pratice and more pratice good luck and have fun.

you must pick up quick anyway going for a shortboard first time.

mark

thats about all i can tell you i just do it not that good at telling people how too do it.

Yep essex is right its got a lot to do with the direction you are looking your body should compensate and lean in the direction your eyes are going however it has a lot to do with actually taking off the wave. If you wait till you have made a drop to turn then you have lost a great deal of momentum and your ride will be cut short unless it is a really clean long face. You need to initiate a turn almost from the word go so instead of taking a drop you are allready angled that way you pick up enough speed to get into the edge of the wave.

Moving up and down the wave i.e pulling up the line then droping down aka trimming helps to pick up speed and get past the breaking sectioins.

Having a good undertsanding of how the wves are breaking helps a great deal its no good doing everything right but catching a wave that is going to close out quickly then it doesnt really matter what you do te ride is over.

Hope that helps

Remember that you have to generate speed.. the wave won't just keep pushing you. Sure - when you first go down the face, you get some speed, but the wave won't keep pushing you after that.

you need to use some of that forward motion to go back up the face, and then generate more forward motion by going back down the face.

Up and down, up and down.

definitely, have to work on that for sure im having trouble because sometimes i lean a little too far back and end up doing some kinda layback thing and then the wave just passes over me, i think its more mental than anything, but to counter this if i just lean a little more the other way will i be good?

Yes - leaning back or putting more weight in some other way on the tail will stall you, like a brake. you want to keep an even center of balance. Leaning forward a bit will give you some extra speed, but it won't sustain you.
