problem with foam board

Ok my dad is having trouble on the surfboard he uses a 9' foamboard and hes 6'2" and 260 pounds. Is it his weight that is the problem cause he says it sinks when he tries to standup.

At his hight and weight assuming he is a beginer, I would be using a larger board with more volume. I personaly would be looking at something of the nature of a 10+ with 3 inch rails.

That being said, I have seen bigger guys surfing smaller boards. It is just more difficult to start off with.

i thought he might need a bigger board but wasnt sure now the problem is just finding a rental shop in santa cruz that rents boards that size

im sure the 9ft would be fine if hes sinking its beacuse he dont have enough momentum. if you go bigger try a 9.6-10 that should be acceptable.

Yeah - agreed on the 9 footer foamboard should float a rhino.

If it isn't sinking when he lays flat on it paddling, and a few feet of the nose stay out of the water when he's sitting on it waiting for a wave, then when he stands, and the board is moving forward, he should be fine.

I'm guessing here, just because you didn't give much info, but - is the problem that the nose of the board is sinking? If so, he might just be standing up too far forward on the board.

i hired a 8ft foamboard to take my bird surfing, im about the same height as your dad but a bit lighter and i found it flexed a hell of a lot under my weight and therefore sunk in the middle when i had a go . I would say dont go longer in a foamboard, possibly shorter would be better than longer, but even better might be something stiffer like a glass or epoxy board if hes having a similar problem
