BRAND NEW... WHAT TO DO?

Whats up everyone? Yeah I'm a new surfer... even though I've lived in Newport Beach my entire life. I always wanted to surf but I've been afraid of the water and never had the courage to conquer that fear.

Well... Feck it!!! I'm going in head first and I'm going to surf or die trying.

I have a BIC 7'3" board my friend gave me when he left for school. It's just sitting in storage. Is that a good board to start out on or should I get something else?

What's a good wetsuit to wear? The water is nice right now but in a few months I'm going to need one.

Should I get lessons at first? There is a good surf school here I could go to but I'm not sure if it's necessary.

What's a good place to start out on in Newport? Blackies? 46th?

that is an ok board to start on so dont bother getting another, i would wear a summer suit at the moment and yes get a few lessons first.

I wouldnt worry about the wetsuit just yet until you decide if you like surfing. Im about an hour north of you and its all boardshorts and rashguards up here. I didnt know we could get Bics in the states.

I surf in Newport, just started last month. What surf school do you speak of? 26th is a good place to hang around, 32nd isn't bad but can get crowded. I don't think lessons are exactly necessary, especially if you have a lot of time to read up and have friends to talk to who surf.

There are surf schools all over the coast, these offer both group and private lessons. Some of these schools are only operational during the summer. Corky Carroll runs one out of Huntington Beach, as well as the rental shops. Check out your local surf shops, see what they offer.
Lessons are a good idea as they know the break and can help you become more familiar with it faster and safer than you would on your own
If you are up for a drive to San Diego, there is a wider range of year round lesson providers, La Jolla Shores is a good place to start looking.
