Help - first lesson on saturday

Postby newbie » Thu Aug 10, 2006 12:45 pm

Help! Me and the girls have booked to have a 1/2 day taster lesson with a surf school - thought I'd give it a go even though I don't really like the water - I must be mad!!!!

But I wear glasses - (short sighted!), will it be ok wearing my contact lenses? I wear daily disposable ones but I'm just worried they might come out when I go under water! There must be some surfers out there that don't have great vision! Any experiences?

You'll be fine.

If you're that worried bring an extra set.

I wear contacts (2 wk. disp.) and don't have a problem. I just keep my eyes closed under water.

Welcome to the forum!

You should be fine with contacts, just close your eyes when you go under - it seems to be a reflex for me, so no wories!

And enjoy your lesson! Where abouts are you?

Thanks

I'm from Dorset - going to Newquay this weekend!! Thought it was about time I gave surfing a go seeing as though I live by the sea, should make the most of it really. Looking forward to it but I'm a bit nervous.

Surf is gonna be rubbish for 'real' surfing, but should be fine for a newbie's first go :D

Have fun!

I survived!!!

Had an excellent time surfing - the instructors were really good and I actually managed to stand up (for all of 2 seconds!!!).
Didn't realise how exhausting it was though, after 2 hours I was shattered!!!

Still not good with the balancing bit - they taught us to get up to your knees first, then front foot then back but I found by the time I'd done that I was almost at the shore!!

It was an amazing feeling can't wait to try it again.

Skip getting to your knees first. If anything, make sure to plant your front foot, then you can 'drag' your back foot up, using your knee first.. but once you have balance down, you should be planting both feet right away.

If you don't start that way, then you'll persist with the bad habit of knee first.
