Short Beach Break Pearling!

Postby Tallows » Tue Jul 13, 2004 1:31 am

hey everybody, just wanted to say first off thanks to whoever runs this site and those that contribute their knowlede, it really seems a great help to a lot of people, respect.

been surfing on and off, sadly mostly off, for a few years now, mostly on beach breaks with long sweeping rides in Oz and Cornwall. moved to Japan and now get to surf a lot more often, but the waves here come in very frequent sets and break a lot closer to the shore, and as soon as they reach about 2.5/3ft plus, i cant stop pearling! tried moving further to the back of the board/arching my back up, but it doesnt seem to help and i sometimes end up with the board rearing up, then slapping down into the wave and sinking the nose. im guessing im not paddling hard enough, what do you guys reckon? i ride a 7ft4 mini mal. any help appreciated, cheers!

if a wave is jacking up like that then try taking off at an angle.

So instead of your board point straight to the beach, paddle at a 45 degree angle to the beach in the direction the wave is going to break if you see what I mean?
