painful painful pop-up problem!

Postby linter » Fri Jun 23, 2006 11:48 pm

this is my first summer surfing and i have a 10' longboard. i've pretty much got popping up down, except for one or two things: everytime i do so, i graze my left knee against the board and somehow bop my right ankle on the board as well. (i'm a goofy foot.) i do not know when in my pop up this is happening because, literally, i don't feel any pain as it's happening. but: i've got a small open-wound hole developing on my knee and my inner right ankle is black and blue and swollen. i've tried paying attention during my pop up to see what i'm doing wrong but for the life o' me, i can't figure it out. it's driving me crazy. and it hurts.

this ever happen to anyone else? and: any thoughts about how i might deal with the problem?

sheesh!

Ever since I was a kid I had Oscgood Sclatters. It basically means weak bone where the tendons are connected.

As a kid I didnt take it to seriously, and now it screws up my surfing a lot.

I find that everytime I put my right knee on the board it would kill, so next time I cane to pop up, I would watch exactly what I did wrong (even if it made me wipeout) and next wave try my hardest not to do it.

So..I presume you are dragging your front foot through, causing bruising.

Also, do you have a tail guard? Because when I had one, just laying on the board would slice a hole in my knee.

Good luck!

yeah i get that on my knees from the deck pad, got bruises there now. We only get it warm enough to surf in a shortie for a few flat months here tho so i dont worry about it much, be back in my 5x3 fullsuit with kneepads soon.

How do you know it's from your pop up?

Sometimes riding bigger waves has munted my anckles a bit because of the forces involved and then I'll be standing kinda wrong. Know what I mean??

What difference has it made trying to pop up softer? Smoother?

I got this from my deck grip on an older board. It had a raised kick tail and I sometimes used to catch my knee on the way up. I kept on surfing and every session would scrape away at the old wound until it would not heal up properly.
I took a while out while it healed properly and levelled out the kick pad. From then on it was ok.

I had same xxxxx happen, still got scars on my knees today, i found it was from being lazy on the take off and doing the one knee thing and draggin my knee of my front foot as i poppped up, as a begginner u tend to get frustrated and drag urself up on the board just for the sake of poppin up, dont worry this will pass with practice, also i found if I overwaxed my board and wiped out couple of times early in session wich most beginners will , lots of sand would stick to the wax , this can cause rashes and this nasty knee scrapes, just a tip. Good luck with ur surfing , stick with it.
