Board stability

Postby Lucy » Thu May 20, 2004 3:35 pm

I've surfed about 3 times now, twice on a foam and once on a bic, but although i have quite good balance, i always find that when i'm trying to stand up i feel really unstable and therefore get put off! I've only stood up briefly a few times, but how stable should i be on the board before i stand up, or should i just go for it no matter what? I'm pretty sure that i'm centred alright and the board is the right size, so maybe it's just me! I found it a lot easier on the bic than on the foamie, which i found strange because the foamie is supposed to be the easiest board to ride!

Also, out of interest, has anyone ever ridden or know anyone that's ridden a board shaped by Spider at emoceanl surf in Newquay? Just want to know what his boards are like since he doesn't seem to have any reputation that i've heard of..

Thanks :)

Hey dude, how's tricks? When you stand up, where do you look? Most people naturally tend to look at their feet, but this doesn't help. Instead, look at where you want to go, and you *should* end up going that way ;), and it'll help your balance loads. If you can get a go on and indo board or a long skate board, that'll help too. Finally, make sure when you pop up, your feet are about a shoulder width apart with knees slightly bent...

Also, my housemate has a Spider, and she loves it! I've tried it once, but it's a small board so it didn't take kindly to 15st trying to stand on it!

Thanks guys :D I probably do forget to look where i'm going, when i started riding my motorbike that was one of my problems then but i overcame that pretty quickly, so i should be ok.

Thanks for the info about the spider, they look pretty nice, but they're so cheap compared to other boards of that size that i wasn't sure what they were like quality wise!
