I keep banging toes on the deck as I pop up...

Postby XiloRider » Sun Oct 11, 2020 4:52 am

Like the Subject says, it's mostly my rear foot, but sometimes the front too. On the rear it's just my big toe that hits, kinda from the side, and it's starting to hurt. I can see this turning into a bunion if I don't change my ways quick LOL The front foot will sometimes fold over and scrape the tops of my toes for a bit. Usually I'm able to right myself and keep cruising along, but still, not a good look.

Anyway, any tips?

Sometimes putting your outside hand further forward on your rail can help get your front foot through the popup quicker. So the hand on the inside rail would be close to your chest and the other hand is a little further up by your shoulder/head.

I have similar issues with foot/knee drag and this technique seems to help some. It also helps if I keep reminding myself to try to be more explosive during the popup. That helps me popup with more leg clearance, if its been a longer session and fatigue starts to set in. Thats when it feels like my foot drag is much worse.

LOL I doubt it. Maybe I should give it a go.

I was actually thinking this yesterday. Maybe I'm "facing forward" too long. The technique you describe would create more room and probably help me rotate my body more/faster as I get up.

I tried "flicking" my feet up more, bending at the knees, for a little extra oomph, and it actually works. Just can't really do it consistently yet. Definitely gonna add the new hand position.

Of course, I'm also almost 48 years old....

I’m going to give you my little hand position secret, as a fellow old person (older in fact). If you are natural footed, move your right hand way way down, to your belly button. Then your left hand is a bit further up, around bottom of rib level. Reverse for goofy.

The low hand gives a big push up for your hips and lots of room for your legs to come through (I suspect your issue is that your hands are too high).

The offset hands means you are twisting right from the start off the pop up.

As waikikichan shows, you need to make a hips up movement and then feet through. If you think it’s a ‘drag your knees through’ movement you will have issues.

Although I am assuming you are doing a one movement pop up, rather than a step through or multi stage pop
up - which might have other reasons for those toe bangs

Yes, I'm doing a one-movement popup (or at least I'm trying to). I'm going to try the hand thing next time I'm out.

funny enough, every time I longboard I end up with the top of my toes all scuffed up, like someone took sandpaper to them. For me it's my shortboard tendencies don't work for longboarding, but I still have fun. For starters, a shortboard is, well, shorter, so when I sweep up my feet I don't hit anything, with a longboard the tops of my toes scrape. Not sure I have any advice, but know you aren't alone
