Wobble board

Postby Jabout » Fri May 07, 2004 10:55 am

I'm going on holiday to learn to surf this summer :D - well I hope to learn the basics!

To make the most of it I'm already working on my fitness, but I guess balance is going to be pretty crucial - will a wobble board help?

Thanks for any responses.

Hi There

I'm not sure about wobble boards, they are probably quite good for strengthening the stabiliser muscles in the knees and improving the balance.

One of the best things you can do to help it to practise popping up from lying down to standing up. (like on Point Break) This is one of the hardest things to get right in the water as a beginner and is more important than balance at this stage.

Hope this helps

I have pretty good balance to start with, but also practiced a lot on balancing, and it didn't help one bit. Balancing in the water is so different, because you have to constantly balance yourself due to the waves and little ripples. Lay on a shortboard in the water and just paddle and rest for hours to get the right balance.

A wobble board is a wooden plate about 2 foot across, underneath in the centre is a 3 inch or so wide ball, or half a ball in profile it looks sort of like this _____________ it really enhances the neurological synapses for

balancing - becaue you have to balance both longitudunally and laterally or a combination of both.

That annoying lol - the preview button had the U underneath the line, essentialy it's a bit like a 360 indo board, or upside down flying saucer.
