You also need to use your legs as anchors in the water on either side of the board

How is your bottom turns and top turns ? Reason I ask is that most people first kick outs are during failed attempts at top turns. They don't get the board to turn down the wave and just keep going up and out the back of the wave.
I know you want to kick out to get out of the way of others, avoid close outs, etc. But kick outs are more an intermediate-advance maneuver. Most beginners should learn turn downs or straighten outs ( with control ) before attempting kick outs. Why? A lot of the time the rider will go over but leave the board on the front of the wave. Make sure to always grab the rails and really direct the board.
If you really need to, remember " Stomp the Tail , Slice the Rail ". Try practicing in deep flat water with no one around. Paddle, stand up, stomp way back on the tail so the board stands up vertical ( like those comedy bits where a guy steps on a rake and gets hit in the face - another reason to use a traction pad with a kick ) grab both rails, fall back and twist/rotate and lay the board down but facing the opposite way of which you paddled. Later as you get good at it and find the balance/sweet spot , you can pause a second or two.
This will work for on the wave and during the paddle. It's hard to pull out quickly while prone

Classic male posturing. Welcome to surf culture. Best to ignore it. I think a lot of it might actually be a Commonwealth cultural export.

From kook to kook. Blaming a big crowd of surf school people for the collision is similar to blaming rocks for being in your way.
As for throwing money at the guy, it depends. If you fave a decent income, I would say sharing costs is an appropriate thing to do. Probably, the guy would fix it himself. So, 20 bucks should have been sufficient. But strike it if the guy was too aggressive and intimidating. If you are on a really low budget some sincere apology coupled with the explanation would suffice.

9 days is not enough to know the spot.

To other guys: no mistakes in the water justify punching or any other physical interaction.
For starters, a kook could be a better fighter than you are. And the police/DA/jury would never buy a surfing mistake as a proper defense.

Not condoning violence , just in some surf spots, violence could be a reaction often with group mentality. Foreigners are are targeted, kook foreigners more so. Sad but true.
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

I was out the other day....kook dropped in on me three times in a row....I called him off the wave the first two times.....second time he was shaking his head and swearing to himself.....the third time i just raced past him and smacked him in his butt with a big "Whooooo".....he left the peak after that and went down the beach.........does that count as an uncalled for physical reaction!?!?! :)

BTW, sometimes things just happen......I'm old now and don't fight anymore, but when I did I NEVER considered if the other guy(s) were better fighters than me or what the legal consequences would be......usually when I fought it would be against multiple opponents and the odds were not good (and I lost alot....usually the case when you take on 4+ guys at a time which I seemed to have a knack for :) ).....logic never really enters into the equation at that point, at least in my case.....when I said what I said it was a warning for the OP and for others like him........things can go south and if you are kooking out in the wrong place be prepared......not everyone weighs the consequences like Oleg....
