how to stand up video for first timers

Postby nj2333 » Mon Sep 16, 2013 7:08 pm

Hi,

I produced this the last time I was visiting Barbados. Zed is one of the best surf teachers in the world today. I put this together for total beginners at his school.

This is for his beginners who have never surfed and he explains how to get to your feet.

I thought i'd share it. Hope this is useful.
Best

Very informative video, Zed. How did you end up in Barbados?

I'm not sure about the getting up onto a knee first thing. Its probably great for getting beginners up as fast as possible, and it works on those nice rolling slow breaking waves at the resort, but try that on a fast breaking beachie like most of us learn on and see what happens.

Otherwise some good tips. I still do the 'line across the board' thing (fingernail in wax) to make sure I'm in the right spot when I go from sitting to paddling.

I just gave a board (a fat fish) to a friend (she snapped hers on saturday - oops) that still had a black line about two inches from the nose - the board's got the shapers symbol about 8" from the nose and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't stop using it as a marker despite the fact it was in the wrong place so I had to put a new one on the board in the right place

I am going to make a new video that has better tips. The tips on the video are not wrong, they just don't work for anyone that is heavy or out of shape.

I run a surf club at my school, take 30 or more beginners surfing 4 to 5 times a year. The ones in shape or skinny or small pick it up just like the video does. But I always give a separate set of instructions to my students, which I give to beginners whenever I can:

Learn to stand up first, then learn to paddle. Go in waist high surf and throw yourself toward the beach on to your surfboard, then stand up. Don't paddle, you will spend time getting beat up by the surf and trying to get out to the lineup where you will get dumped and not catch any waves. Better to get good at popping up before going out to the lineup.

Maybe I will make a video for begginers.
