When to bottom turn

Postby Verde » Thu Mar 21, 2013 2:31 am

I think I figured something out today, but I want to see what you more advanced guys think. So I'm thinking when the waves are breaking slow, or are shoulder-y, it's good to drop in straight and get a good bottom turn in the flats to let the wave get a little more critical for a good fast top turn. But in days where it's breaking really fast, it seems best to get down the line on the high line as fast as possible. Does this sound about right? Am I headed in the right direction?

That's pretty close to the way to do it on both counts, only if it is slow the top turn may not quite work out as there won't be enough drive in some cases> Also if you angle your drop for steeper waves there is a point where your tail will break free if you are too angled, if you can control your tail or hook the board enough to re- engage the fins you're sweet. So varied wave to wave and spot to spot>

It's all only theory until you can do it and make it work repeatedly

Cool, thank you for your feedback. I've had days where I naturally took this approach and had a good time, and others where I did the exact opposite and couldn't figure out why I was surfing like crap.

In some cases you don't even have time to decide.

Don't take safety for granted.
Signal before you turn.
Modern board, like modern automobile, use blinker.
Antique board, like antique automobile, use semaphore.
